Garden Internships (6- and 9-Month Positions)

Applications for the 2012 Garden Internship positions are no longer being accepted.

The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) offers two Internship positions in our 36-year-old biointensive organic garden: A 9-month position from March 1 to December 1, and a 6-month position from May 1 to November 1. Interns work full days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  They will work closely with OAEC’s experienced garden staff: Doug Gosling and Michelle Vesser.

Prior gardening experience is helpful but not necessary. However, a desire to learn and a keen interest in hands-on gardening are essential. We are looking for motivated, self-starting people who can be comfortable occasionally working alone. Garden interns are involved in all aspects of gardening, including propagation and greenhouse work, watering, bed preparation, composting, transplanting, sowing, weeding, harvesting, seed saving and processing, and plant sale preparations. Physical stamina is a must. We work outside rain or shine!

To be considered for a garden internship, you MUST attend at least one Garden Volunteer Day at OAEC. Garden Volunteer Day is every Wednesday (except on the Wednesdays before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's) from 10 am to 5 pm, with a vegetarian lunch served at 12:30 pm. You need not stay all day. Please introduce yourself to the garden staff and let them know you are applying for an internship.

Resumes and Letters of Intention must be submitted to the Garden Internship Program supervisor, Michelle Vesser (email: michellemcv@gmail.com, phone: (707) 874-1557 ext.114) by December 31st. A picture of yourself is requested, yet not required.  Please indicate which position(s) you are applying for.

After initial selection of potential candidates, we require a 2½ hour working on-site interview. This interview will be scheduled in the month of January. Phone interviews are not possible.
